I explored with embossing during the ‘Mediating with the Image’ workshop, a collaborative 3 day workshop for MA Drawing and Printmaking to try alternative methods of artmaking through combining the drawing and printmaking process.
One of the explorations i did was emboss. I’ve done linocut a few times before and I noticed that when prints go through the press, the edges of our print plates will create an embossing effect.
I carved the linocut deeper than usual, and with Pete’s help used the hydraulic press to press on the lino into the paper. The paper was soaked into water first, just like during an etching process so that it doesn’t crease when it’s pressed.
Instead of just ‘staining’ the paper with ink, I imprinted the paper, changing the shape and surface of the media. I realize that this aligns well with my understanding of trauma and memories. This method is something that I would like to explore further through fabrics.
