Alir-Alur (Stream) (2025)
Watercolor, gouache, and pencil color on calico fabric
approx. 59x84 cm
In Alir-Alur (Indonesian: Stream), I began to explore the concept of water beyond it’s role as a supplementary medium in my practice. In this work, I returned to my initial motivation in my practice. Drawing inspiration from the imagery and narratives of my dreams and subconscious mind.
drawing process on calico
Through this, I try to explore the connection between my subconscious and the external world through the metaphor of a river. The river acts as a boundary and bridge between my inner and outer realm. I tried to use visual metaphors within a narrative structure to convey this.
I excessively focused on the final outcome rather than the process itself. This resulted in a finished piece that shifted significantly from my usual artistic approach. The river metaphor that I tried to convey didn’t feel present. instead of having it as the foreground, it felt like just one of the aspects in the artwork. I also removed the fragmentation aspect of my work, which made the artwork felt more like a big conclusion instead of fragmented thoughts.
details of the artwork
Comments during the Silent crit (10/03):
The artwork possesses a fluctuating emotional quality. As the fabric is not stretched, it contributes to an overall sense of fragility. Furthermore, the piece suggests an underlying narrative.
