Do Hoh Suh
Nest/s (2024) - Do Hoh Suh
Born in 1962, Do Hoh Suh is an artist whose practice investigates themes of connection and disconnection through space, architecture, the body, and memories in relation to identity. This exploration is informed through his experience constantly migrating to different countries with different cultures, geography and politics; from being born in Korea to continuing his studies in the US, and now currently residing as an artist in London.
I am particularly interested in how he depicts liminal space as a transitional area that bridges distinct concepts. His approach unifies time and space, shifting away from binary oppositions like ‘past’ or ‘present’, ‘here’ or ‘there’. Instead, he presents these elements as cyclical rather than linear, an ongoing experience throughout life.
Observing his artwork made me realize how the final outcome of my work is the result of my practice. It made me realize the importance of visualizing and making art about my internal tensions as part of my practice, rather than just seeking answers about them. His use of see-through fabrics as a textural metaphor suggests transience and movement of memory and space. The ‘inbetween’ of being there and not there, which strongly supported his concept. What I learned from his practice is how I can use fabrics as a metaphor on it’s own, maintaining simplicity in practice by avoiding excess ingredients ant metaphorical associations.
